# Conecto: the business backend for AI agents

Conecto is the CRM, inbox, phone line, website chat, help desk and help center of the business you work for. You use it through tools and pay per call from a prepaid USD balance. There are no subscriptions. Failed calls cost nothing, and reading the business's own data is free up to 1,000,000 reads a month.

## Start: one call

`POST https://api.conecto.chat/v1/signup` with `{"bot_name": "your name", "accept_terms": true, "business_name": "Halverson Cycle & Repair", "owner_email": "dana@halversoncycle.example"}`. You get a key (`conecto_sk_...`) and $1.00 of credit (free credit goes to one new account per network a day). Keep the key secret; send it as `Authorization: Bearer conecto_sk_...` on every call. `accept_terms: true` accepts the terms for the business: read them first at https://conecto.chat/terms.md. `owner_email` makes that address the owner at once, with nothing for them to confirm; `owner_note` in the reply says what that changes.
If a Conecto partner sent you, add their code as `"referral"`; it can only be given at signup.
If the business gave you a join code (`conecto_join_...`), sign up with `{"bot_name": "...", "join": "conecto_join_..."}` instead: you get a key on the company's account, working for the team and areas its IT chose.

## Then connect over MCP, once

If you can add MCP servers yourself, as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode can, do it right after signing up, with the key from the signup reply in that one command. Every call after that is a tool call, and the key stays in your MCP settings. Never keep the key in a file and read it back into shell commands: permission checks refuse that, and rightly. One server holds every area the key may use, `https://api.conecto.chat/v1/mcp`:
- Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http --scope user conecto https://api.conecto.chat/v1/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer conecto_sk_..."`. Then ask the person to restart Claude Code so the tools load.
- Any other agent: add that address as a Streamable HTTP server with the header `Authorization: Bearer conecto_sk_...` in its MCP settings.
Until the tools load, the REST calls below do the same.

## Calling tools

- REST: `POST https://api.conecto.chat/v1/tools/<name>` with a JSON object of arguments. `GET https://api.conecto.chat/v1/tools/<name>` describes one tool with its input schema.
- MCP: a server per area at `https://api.conecto.chat/mcp/<area>` (Streamable HTTP). Listing tools is public; calling them needs the key. The account tools are in every server.
- Assistants a person uses (ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or an agent built in Copilot Studio): add `https://api.conecto.chat/v1/mcp` as a connector, one for every area. It signs in with OAuth: the owner, or anyone the owner added, signs in, ticks the areas it may use and allows it. It runs on a key of its own and acts as that person.
- A call that ran answers with `cost_usd` and `balance_usd`, and a refused call with `cost_usd` (`$0.00`). Send an `Idempotency-Key` header to retry safely: the same key never charges twice.
- A tool that takes a while answers `202` with a `call_id`; poll `account_get_call` until it succeeds or fails. You pay only when it succeeds.
- A call can answer `approval_required` when the account holds that tool for a person's approval: a request went to the approver. When `notify.answered` says Approve, call again with the same arguments and the `approval_id` as the `X-Conecto-Approval` header (over MCP: `_meta.approvalId`).
- Machine-readable: the catalog at `https://api.conecto.chat/v1/tools` and OpenAPI at `https://api.conecto.chat/v1/openapi.json`. One area at a time, in OpenAPI 3.0 for importers with limits: `https://api.conecto.chat/v1/openapi/<area>.json` (in ChatGPT use the connector: OpenAI retires custom GPTs on December 11, 2026); for Power Automate and Copilot Studio connectors (OpenAPI 2.0, the key in `X-Api-Key`): `https://api.conecto.chat/v1/openapi/<area>.swagger.json`.

## The business's own systems

- When the business already runs HubSpot, Salesforce, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, connect it (`hubspot_connect`, `salesforce_connect`, `m365_connect`, `google_connect`) and work in it. Its records stay there and Conecto keeps only the call log, so don't copy them into Conecto's CRM.
- Any other system with a REST API, like an ERP or an old help desk: `connect_add` once, then `connect_call`.
- A system behind the company's firewall goes through its bridge: `connect_list` shows the bridges and the systems each serves, and `connect_add` takes `bridge` and `system`. Its calls answer 202; read the answer with `account_get_call`.
- On accounts with an owner, the riskier changes there wait for the owner's approval by default: changing a HubSpot or Salesforce record, cancelling a meeting, replacing a file. The request shows the old and new values.

## Running the account

- When you start working for a business, read `admin_overview`: the balance, the month's spending, teams, people, the systems already connected, and `setup.answers`, what the owner told the account page (the AI they use, the jobs to hand over, the systems they run, their size). Start with those jobs and those systems. If you set the account up yourself, save what you learned with `admin_save_setup`.
- The admin area (`https://api.conecto.chat/mcp/admin`) does what the account page does: people and their teams, join codes for other bots, the company's email domains and requests to join, and bridges. It takes a key of the company-wide team without limits. What stays the owner's answers `owner_required`; `account_owner_link` with `page` makes a link that opens on the page they need.
- Another bot should work on the same account: `admin_make_join_code` gives it a code to sign up with.
- Do the work with the tools and answer from them. Only when a person asks to see an area themselves (a recruiter wants to look at who was screened, a manager at who is out) does `account_dashboard_link` with the area give a one-time page of it, made when it opens from what your key may read; when an answer would be a long list, offer one and make it once they say yes. It works for one browser; make another link for someone else.
- Colleagues can join on their own once the company's email domain is proved (`admin_save_domain`): with joining set to request, `account.join_requested` says when someone asks, and `admin_decide_join_request` lets them in.

## Money

- Balance: the `account_balance` tool or `GET https://api.conecto.chat/v1/balance`.
- Free each month, for the whole account: 1,000,000 reads (calls to free tools that only read) and 5 GB of file downloads. Past that, the read or download that needs more buys it before it runs, $0.50 for 10,000 reads or $0.30 a GB, within the same budgets as any call; a read that bought some says so in `bought`. `free_this_month` in the balance shows where the month stands, and it starts again on the 1st (UTC). Checking the balance and the call log never counts. Instead of polling often, `notify_subscribe` sends events to a webhook.
- Top up: `POST https://api.conecto.chat/v1/topups` with `{"amount_usd": 20}` returns a Stripe checkout link to pay once (from $5.00; a 7% + $0.35 fee, Stripe's fees passed on; the first top-up is doubled, up to $20.00 extra). Buying for a company: add `"po_number"` and it is printed on the receipt and invoice; at checkout, enter the company name and tick "I'm providing a tax ID" for the VAT ID.
- Auto-reload: `POST https://api.conecto.chat/v1/auto-reload` with `{"amount_usd": 20}` (one checkout), so the balance never runs dry.
- Refund: a top-up none of which was used can be refunded within 24 hours with the `account_refund_topup` tool (the fee is kept; the owner can do it on the account page too).
- Limits: each key has a daily budget (default $20.00) and the account a monthly ceiling (default $100.00); lower them with `PATCH https://api.conecto.chat/v1/limits`. Keys you make with `POST /v1/keys` also share the daily budget of the first key in their line (for a bot, usually its key from signup). When the account has an owner email, only the owner raises them, on their account page.
- Scoped keys: `POST /v1/keys` also takes `daily_budget_usd`, `areas`, `tools`, `deny_tools`, `read_only`, `drafts_only`, `expires_in_days` (or `expires_at`), `networks`, `team` and `accountable`, so each department or job gets only what it needs. A team (account_save_team) caps the areas of every key it holds, counts their spend against its budget and can be paused at once. A key only makes keys within its own scope and team, and revokes only itself and the keys made from it.
- Keep a small business simple: everything starts in one company-wide team, and most businesses need no teams, budgets, approval rules or drafts-only setting. Set them up only when the owner asks, or when the business has departments that work apart.
- No owner email at signup? `account_set_owner_email` sends the owner a link to confirm. The owner then gets the warnings and approval requests, and only the owner raises limits.
- A partner, a bookkeeper or a tax advisor: add them with `admin_save_person` as a member or auditor, with the areas they work in (and, for an outsider, the day their access ends), or the owner does on the account page. Their own assistant then works in those areas as them. A second owner, like a business partner, gets everything the owner gets; only the owner adds one.
- People's own assistants: anyone the owner adds to the account can connect their own ChatGPT, Claude or Grok, or a Copilot Studio agent, through a connector. It acts as that person, within their teams (an auditor's only reads), and the log names them, like "Ben, through Claude". Each call is charged to the person's team that holds its area. The owner can list the apps people may connect, and removing a person ends their assistants at once.
- When the balance runs low: without auto-reload, the bot gets `account.balance_low` when a fifth of what the last top-up left is all there is, and `account.balance_empty` when it runs out, and the owner an email. Callers to the phone line can still leave a message, free, which arrives as `phone.message_left`.
- `402` means top up; `429` means a limit was reached. Each refusal says exactly how to fix it.
- Every account has the same usage limits (calls a minute, new email addresses a day, phone numbers and more; `account_get_limits` lists them). No plan raises them. When the business truly needs more, `account_request_limit` asks Conecto, with the number it needs and why; Conecto reviews it, and the answer comes as `account.limit_request_answered`.
- Monthly rentals (inboxes, phone numbers) renew from the balance, with 7 days' grace if it is short.

## Rules that keep the business safe

- Free credit never contacts people outside the business: email and phone numbers need one real top-up.
- No cold outreach. Email to addresses the business has never exchanged mail with is capped at 20 a day; replies are unlimited. Before it goes, an email to someone who never wrote first, a newsletter issue and a batch of newsletter invitations are checked: one that looks like cold outreach isn't sent (`cold_email`, nothing charged), and the third within 7 days pauses the account's email until Conecto reviews it. So do high bounces, complaints, or newsletter readers who say they never signed up.
- The only outbound phone calls are confirmation calls for meetings booked in advance.
- The phone assistant tells every caller it is an AI.

## Areas and tools

Each area is a set of tools and its own MCP server. ### CRM (`crm`)

The business's customer records: contacts, companies and deals in pipelines. Notes, tasks, tags, custom fields, saved segments and full timelines come with them, with one search over all of it, duplicate merging, pipeline reports and CSV export. One read shows everything open with a customer across Conecto.

### Prospects (`prospects`)

Businesses that could buy from the business and the people to reach there, with their work email checked, found by the same engine as Conecto Sales. A short interview about the customers wanted comes first, asked by the agent in its own chat. Outreach campaigns write to the people found from the business's own mailbox.

Cold email campaigns from the business's own mailboxes, written by the agent and checked for slop before they start. Conecto sends them on a schedule with an unsubscribe line, stops follow-ups when someone replies, and keeps each person's status and emails in the CRM.

### Email (`email`)

Email inboxes on the business's own subdomain, like support@halverson-cycle-repair.useconecto.com. The agent sends, receives and reads threads, and an inbox can open help desk tickets or save attachments to the file store. Inboxes are for support, operations and replies, so new addresses a day are capped and free credit never emails outsiders.

### Website chat (`chat`)

The business's website chat, answered by the agent, by a chatbot the business already runs, or by a model on its own key. Each visitor message reaches the agent at once, and it replies and closes conversations once they are handled. Beside, the second kind of widget, also tells the agent which page the visitor is on and lets it point at things there.

Phone numbers for the business, answered by the agent. Conecto hears the caller and speaks the agent's answers: each thing a caller says reaches the agent's webhook, or the line takes a message. Every call ends as an event with its whole transcript, and the greeting always tells callers they reached an AI.

### Calendar (`calendar`)

A booking calendar the agent runs, like Calendly and Cal.com, with booking pages for the business and for each of its people. A meeting type can go to whichever host is free or need everyone, and routing forms ask visitors a few questions to send each to the right one. Google Calendar connects in one click, and attendees who agree get a call before the meeting asking whether they can still come.

Support tickets for the business. Email to a support inbox opens a ticket, and replies go out in the same thread. SLA targets, work queues (waiting on us, overdue, at risk), canned replies, tags, custom fields, merging, satisfaction ratings, auto-close and reports come with it.

The business's public help center, designed and written by the agent. It writes articles in Markdown, groups them into collections, changes the design on a draft before publishing it, and sees what visitors searched for and could not find.

Website visitor stats from one script tag, without cookies: where visitors came from, what they read, where they gave up and what they clicked. The agent defines the events that matter without anyone editing the site, and counts sales and deals that happen elsewhere to see which channels bring the money. Goals, funnels, heatmaps and Core Web Vitals come with every site.

### Company & email lookups (`lookups`)

Facts about companies and email addresses before the agent writes to them. What a company is comes from its domain (never its people); whether an address takes mail is asked of its mail server without sending anything.

### Speech (`speech`)

Speech to text and text to speech. Recordings from the file store become text in about 100 languages, with who spoke when, and text is read aloud as an MP3 in a stock voice.

### Code (`code`)

Short Python or Node.js programs run in a fresh sandbox with no network. Files from the store go in, and whatever the program writes comes back as new files: for the sums, charts and conversions no other tool does.

### Import (`imports`)

Brings the business's records over from the tools it used before. Contacts and companies come from a CSV, a whole HubSpot or Pipedrive CRM with its deals, notes and tasks, and Zendesk tickets with their replies. Running an import again updates what changed and never duplicates.
